Compass Tanks was established in October 1992. Bindon Burns and Michael Pfeiffer, both unemployed at the time, recognised a market demand for good quality, traditionally made rainwater tanks. They applied to the South Australian government for financial assistance but were rejected on the grounds that the business would not be viable due to strong competition.

Undeterred, they borrowed a meager capital and with the assistance of Noel Lennard, a tank maker with over 40 years experience, the first tank rolled out of the workshop on 1 November 1992. In their first 12 months, Compass Tanks produced approximately 250 galvanized tanks.
